4 Tips for Using Social Media for Recruitment

By Karan Cushman, June 17, 2011

Taking advantage of social media for recruitment can be beneficial to your biotech company by conveying your message quickly and effectively, as well as for targeting a specific audience.

It can be a very overwhelming process hiring new employees for your biotech company. The timing and finances are always factors in determining when and where to do this. Luckily, social media is helping make this process easier and faster. Here are some helpful tips on how to use social media for recruitment.

Below is my summary from a perceptive article about leveraging social media and technology for small business written by Anna Lindow for Mashable.com.  Anna provides some helpful tips for using social media to your advantage for recruiting new employees.

1. Connect On a Personal Level, First
It’s easy to convey a message quickly by using Twitter. By tweeting about a specific job listing you may have some practical applicants reply but make sure you’re connecting with your target audience on a personal level from the very beginning. In other words, before they are even looking for a job. Social media allows you to engage in conversations and cultivate relationships, so it should convey your personality as an employer along the way.

2. Know the Differences of Your Audience
As mentioned before, getting to know your audience by engaging in conversations is a great start, but you might not find all your potential recruiters that way. While many college students are open to different types of jobs, other specific professionals may not want everyone to know about their possible career move. LinkedIn is another great place to begin your search because it permits prospective employees to place their resumes online without the backlash of their present employer.

3. Be Sure Your Message Stands Out
Everyday there are thousands of messages about job opportunities out there on the web. Make sure that your message stands out from the rest of the companies in your industry recruiting by showing your biotech company’s unique personality. This can give potential employees the opportunity to see if your company is the right fit for them. Present your message in a more engaging manner and you will get the attention you deserve. Consider making a short video that can grab one’s attention in a creative way.

4. Be Willing to Share
Recruiting online means that you are publicly searching and sharing information. Your potential employers, as well as your biotech company, need to be prepared for this. Certainly you can use this to your advantage though by presenting the skillful, web-savvy people that your biotech company has engaged with and are hiring.
